Fantastic Flamethrowers and How to Use Them[]

Flamethrowers are late-game alternatives to Grenade Launchers as heavy duty crowd control weapons.

Flamethrowers are best thought of as a cross between a Grenade Launcher and a Machine Gun: They fire high pressure flame particles that can pierce through multiple targets before disappearing, dealing low single target damage but high total DPS to large crowds. The flame heavily slows down zombie, but lack the ability to stagger zombies or interrupt their attack.

Similarly to Grenade Launchers, Flamethrowers ignore all PvE armor by default.

Requirements[]

Currently, the only lootable Flamethrower is the 135 proficiency Dragon's Maw. Other Flamethrowers are Limited Edition which all require 120 proficiency, the only exception being the Fatman's Cryothrower.

Flamethowers cannot crit and do not need high Reloading due to their high capacity relative to their fire rate. The only real essential stat is Accuracy, which grants more precise control of the flame jet.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages

  • Second highest grinding DPS.
  • High accuracy.
  • Ammo is space efficient, a stack of fuel usually last longer than a stack of pistol or rifle ammo when used by a machine gun.
  • Much easier to use than Grenade Launchers, can more reliably hit the maximum target count with each attack.
  • Damage is split into multiple small chunks across multiple target, greatly reducing overkill damage.

Disadvantages

  • Ineffective against bosses, just like Grenade Launchers.
  • Not as safe as Machine Guns in terms of slowing down hordes.
  • Several lategame zombies have Fire or Cryo damage resistance.

Usage Tips[]

  • Flame projectiles are most likely to reach max target count if zombies are neatly lined up. Backpedal in large circles or straight paths, do not make sharp turns often as zombies may disperse.
  • Flamethrowers struggle to push back lone ambushers that will block your path when you are backpedalling against a horde. Sprint from them quickly or switch to another weapon to deal with them if needed.
  • Just like Grenade Launchers, Flamethrowers are ineffective against bosses. Combo them with high accuracy, ranged weapons (i.e. Pistols, Rifles, Shotguns, Sub-Machine Guns, Assault Rifles).

A step up from the experimental TN8 flamethrower, designed with inputs from Camp Valcrest engineers. The Dragon's Maw features an expanded tank that can hold up to 5 times more gasoline and catalyst than its predecessor, as well as a tertiary nozzle that pre-mixes fuel with oxygen before ignition, resulting in a more efficient, hotter flame that can pierce through even the most fire resistant target. Such improvements were made possible with the inclusion of Experimental Part alloy in its construction, utilizing its incredible heat resistance and durability to great effect.

A masterpiece created by the hand of the crazed Fatman and developed in its hidden factory in the north pole, no one really knows how this "frost thrower" works. What can be observed is that this bizarre weapon uses gasoline that through an unknown process is synthesized to shoot itself as a blast of super freezing frost, which results in hordes and hordes of frozen infected unable to move for variable periods of time, before suffering a sudden death by thermal shock. Tests carried out against mutant bosses show that this same effect is applicable to them, freezing them and drastically reducing their movement speed. Mainly used by Fatman when facing the most dangerous mutants one can find in Fairview.

Since the start of the outbreak, the accepted truth is that the virus effectively renders the host immune to fire, making the host significantly stronger in some cases. This fact is due to the regenerative mechanisms of the virus. The virus can regenerate the hosts flesh at a higher rate than most sources of heat are capable of burning it away. The remaining mass of dead cells, bone and carbonised elements result in "armoured" areas of the host's body and, through the extremely rapid regeneration of cells, leads to cellular evolution at an unprecedented rate. The TN8 doesn't change this, it simply exploits a simple fact; not all fire is created equally. Chemical engineers at the Secronom Bunker have spent a lot of time working to produce something which, when combusted, is capable of producing sufficient heat to outpace the regeneration of an infected host. Finally, these efforts have borne fruit.

The chemical is employed as an additive to common gasoline in a primary-secondary ignition configuration, where an ignition source first ignites the gasoline which in turn produces enough heat to ignite the additive chemical which goes on to burn at far greater temperatures than gasoline can achieve. The chemical is used at an efficient rate to the required gasoline, meaning a single charge of additive is enough for many litres of gasoline. This allows a single, sealed capsule of the additive to be provided to survivors in possession of a TN8 Flamethrower via the Secronom Bunker armoury when they set off into the city. The sealed nature of this capsule helps ensure secrecy, and the provision of only a single capsule ensures that any bandits who recover a TN8 will not be able to turn it on survivors for very long.

The name "TN8" stands for "Totally Not a (read: eigh) Flamethrower." Likely as a sarcastic nod to the idea that fire should not be able to kill the infected.

Originally intended as an experimental glassblowing tool meant to melt down silica sand within custom molds, this short-range flamethrower quickly found a second calling as a weapon by survivors. While capable of producing flames hot enough to char zombies black within seconds, production of copies of it came to an end once it became clear that its range and area of effect were permanently limited due to the design requirements for producing its incredibly hot flame.
