Make Things Go Boom - A Guide To Explosives[]

Grenade Launchers are powerful explosive weapons that could deal a very high total of DPS against a cluster of enemies, but very little DPS to singular individuals.

Grenade Launchers have 2 fire modes that can be switched at will by pressing Q:

  • Direct Fire: Fires a tracer that can create an explosion, whose location and property depends on the object hit by the tracer. Accuracy affects the tracer's spread, but the explosion's location is always consistent relative to the tracer:
    • If the tracer hits a zombie or PvP player, a Direct Explosion will be immediately generated 1.5m behind the target, ensuring that targets behind the initial one will also be damaged. Direction Explosion deals significant directional knockback.
    • If the tracer hits a wall or obstacle, the tracer will bounce back once for 4m, then generate an Indirect Explosion at where it lands 0.4s later. Indirect Explosion does not inflict knockback and can only stagger zombies.
    • If the tracer fails to find any target, the grenade will instead be fired in Indirect Fire mode. This effectively acts as a second chance for the explosion to inflict damage.
  • Indirect Fire: Creates an Indirect Explosion at your cursor's position 0.4s after firing, ignoring all enemies and obstacles in the way. Accuracy affects how far the explosion's center can stray away from your cursor.

Grenade explosion deals variable damage to each target, depending on the amount of targets caught in its 2m blast radius:

Target Count Damage per Target
(relative to Base Damage)
Total Damage
1 350% 350%
2 200% 400%
3 150% 450%
4 125% 500%
5 100% 500%
  • If hitting 6+ targets, those beyond the 5th will not receive damage, but still get staggered/stunned.
  • In PvP, explosion always deals 100% of base damage per target, regardless of target count.

Grenade Launchers by default ignore all PvE armor, meaning they will bypass any protection employed by zombies to directly damage them. Grenade Launchers are also capable of stunning all non-boss zombies and staggering bosses, preventing them from moving or attacking for a short while.

Requirements[]

10 Explosive points are required to use the M79, the first grenade launcher. While the first few launchers require a high Reload stat to counteract their small magazine size, grenades overall are not stat hungry weapons - they only require an investment in Accuracy and Reload, as opposed to other weapons which will require a combination of Strength, Accuracy, Critical and Reload.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages

  • Highest grinding DPS of all weapon types.
  • High accuracy.
  • Ammo is cheap and space efficient, a stack of grenades usually last longer than a stack of pistol or rifle ammo when used by a machine gun.
  • Good crowd control capability with high knockback + stun capability.
  • Indirect fire allows for cheesing zombies through walls, providing greater flexibility compared to firearm.

Disadvantages

  • Low damage against lone targets, such as massive bosses like Charred Titans.
  • Elite zombies (non-boss enemies with 3000+ HP) have 50% resistance to stun.

Usage Tips[]

  • Know your fire modes: Direct fire is best for fighitng in open space for better EXP gain, and indirect fire is best for eliminating zombies across walls and obstructions.
  • Indoors, indirect fire can be used to clear a room of zombies before entering, or kill randomly spawned horde if your gear setup is not suited to fighting them directly. For the latter, it is best to camp behind a wall close to a building entrance/wall to keep zombie spawning predictable.
  • With direct fire, move in medium sized circles to corral the zombies into a ball formation, maximizing the amount of target hits with each explosion. Keep your distance from them as Grenade Launchers are accurate weapons.
  • Grenade Launchers have low effectiveness against lone bosses, so combo them with high accuracy, ranged weapons that can handle them well. These are: Pistols, Rifles, Shotguns, Sub-Machine Guns, Assault Rifles.

Indirect Fire Combat (Legacy)[]

These tactics have been made obsolete with the introduction of direct fire as the main method for fighting zombies in open area:

The PAW-20 is a hand-held, semi-automatic grenade launcher that fires a 20 mm point detonating round. It holds up to seven rounds in a conventional box magazine, with an effective range of 300–400 meters. It was designed mainly as an anti-personnel grenade launcher for use against opposition closely grouped together or behind light cover. However, it is also compatible with less-than-lethal ammunition. The PAW-20 is in direct competition with the more complicated and expensive joint American-German XM25.

Built on the basic design of the M79, the Immolator possesses a unique tube-feed system that allows it to carry and fire up to 10 grenades before being reloaded. While the tube feed also eliminates the need for rotating barrels and the like for carrying more than one round, it also relies on a highly complex feeding and reloading mechanism, and only survivors with extensive ability in handling grenade launchers can hope to wield it.

From the creator of the Gorespike and the Pierceshot comes the Dreadnought AD, a remaster of another classic "junkyard" weapon known and loved by many. Most of the kinds with the original model's feeding mechanism has been ironed out, and a longer reinforced barrel allows the Dreadnought to fire more powerful loads at longer range. The Immolator's buttstock bayonet has also been thankfully removed, allowing survivors to actually aim without a severe case of shoulder pain.

The 'Junker 6' is yet another innovative addition to the 'Junkyard' set of weapons created by the coven of demolition experts under the direct command of Neil Yates himself. By taking the drum magazine of a Hawk MM-1 and expanding its capacity, it allowed for a longer volley of sustained and overwhelming firepower, while keeping the light weight and balance of an Immolator. With several other slight modifications and parts taken from similar weaponry, it is a perfect choice for those who wish to destroy their surroundings with efficiency and power.

Effectively an M79 in name only, the X-M79 is a custom built MGL-type 20 round grenade launcher, with the only original part being the barrel and stock. The X-M79 fires grenades using the same neurotoxin used in the N-9/2025 ammunition type, creating clouds of bio-engineered poison that can practically suffocate entire hordes of N-4 infected with every shot.

Real Name: Mk 19 Grenade Launcher
The Mk 19 is an American belt-fed automatic grenade launcher first developed during the Vietnam War. It fires 40mm heavy grenades at a cyclic rate of 325-375 rounds per minute. Designed to fire from a tripod or a vehicle mount (with the latter being preferable), the Mk19 is capable of penetrating the armors of most APCs/IFVs with a direct hit, and is also greatly effective against enemy infantry formations.

The "Scorcher" variant is an evolution of the Mk19, made possible by the machinery discovered in SEZ and the ingenuity of Fairview residents. Key improvements include the reconfiguration of the trigger group to allow comfortable handling with a minigun-style chainsaw grip, the use of post-outbreak alloys that helped to lighten the weapon to a "man portable" 25.8kg, and, most importantly, the introduction of N-9/2025 munitions to improve the weapon's effectiveness against infected crowds.

An excruciatingly powerful grenade launcher, crafted from the remains of the infected. Its barrel, as best as demolition experts can tell, is crafted from the spine of a mutated survivor, the stock made from the shoulder, and the curled hand still gripping the dead heart. Grenades shot from this launcher are unlike any other in that, upon landing, they explode into fragments of bone and blood, rather than flame and shrapnel. These gory fragments easily dig into the flesh of any person nearby, whether survivors or infected. Some say that each explosion frees a lost soul from its eternal torment as an infected.

While searching for a way to clear the debris littering the streets, Fairview's demolition experts have rigged a Mortar to have a high capacity chamber system similar to an Immolator. In doing so, they have created a hand held grenade launcher that is capable of putting pre-outbreak demolition teams to shame. One thing is for sure, you do NOT want to be on the receiving end of this monstrosity, as there won't be anything left but a bloodstain to clean up.

The Cryo Launcher fires grenades that contain a modified version of the serum used in the Crossbow, which create shockwaves that vaporized most of the serum into an aerosol with any remaining serum coating the high velocity shrapnel of the explosive shell. An unexpected but welcome side-effect of this delivery method caused by the serum's conveniently high enthalpy of vaporization was a chilling effect that, combined with the action of the serum itself, caused the infected to move significantly slower upon being hit by these explosive shells. Sadly, this appears to still have little effect against human target.

In the never-ending race of creating new weaponry to deal with the volatile N-4 virus pandemic, AdminPwn's select team of gunsmiths and demolition experts are always working on developing new technologies that can help this cause and In recent times this has paid off. After discovering new cutting-edge technology developed by rebel factions across Fairview, the mythical X-Dusk weaponry has been upgraded to supreme levels. Such is the case of the Dawn Launcher that thanks to the conversion with the experimental parts developed in Secronom Bunker it was possible to achieve a greater firepower and explosion range that this beast can create, adding to this that the grenades loaded in the barrel are capable of to disperse the N-9/2025 neurotoxin, thus giving an even greater advantage against the N-4 virus mutations. As expected, the conversion to this model is not accessible to the general public, so AdminPwn asks that it only be granted to those who prove themselves worthy of carrying this monstrous grenade launcher as well as having the capital to pay for the resources and necessary manpower.

A Russian pump-action grenade launcher that found it ways into the arsenal of Secronom's so called "biohazard response team". This launcher was credited for the first ever recorded Behemoth kill in Fairview history, by trapping the beast underneath tons of rubble in a small alley before obliterating its cranium with a blast straight into its mouth.
