Melee Weapons For Dummies[]

Melee range visualization

Melee range visualization
Early game knives have range of 1m, and standard blades have range of 1.5m

πŸ—‘οΈ The quintessential looting weapon in the game, Melee Weapons are silent, close range weapon that do not require ammunition to use. Melee Weapons can be divided into 2 groups:

  • Blades/Blunts: Characterized by having a longer reach, and an attack speed of 1 hit/s (early game) to 1.5 hits/s (late game). Allows you to out-range most zombie attacks and reach important 1-crit threshold more quickly. ▬▬ι═══════ﺀ
  • Knives: Characterized by having a shorter reach, and an attack speed of 1.5 hits/s (early game) to 2-3 hits/s (late game). Allows you to take out groups of weaker enemies more quickly. ▬ι═ﺀ

Melee Weapons are capable of dealing cleave damage from 2-3 up to 4-5 extra enemies. These enemies take 12.5% of the original damage, allowing certain melee to potentially deal up to 162.5% of its original DPS.

Melee Weapons' primary strength lies in their Very High Critical Chance, which is the highest critical chance possible in the game. Even though Melee Weapons might seems weak at first due to their weak base damage and slow attack speed, a critical hit can severely knock zombies back and inflict 5 times the amount of damage of a normal attack, allowing Melee Weapons (as well as Pistols and Rifles) to kill even end-game common zombies in as little as 1 to 2 hits. This properties is crucial to any player looking to loot efficiently, as it is important to minimize the amount of noticed zombie and eliminate any threat as quickly and cheaply as possible to maximize looting time and profit.

In the early to mid levels, Melee Weapons heavily emphasize the "stealth" aspect compared to Pistols and Rifles, trading DPS, overall crowd control capability and safety for the ability to kill without generating noise or spending ammunition. This is further reinforced by the Stealth stat, which makes it easier to sneak up on zombies and increases your melee damage by up to 25% when maxed. As endgame hits and zombies become increasingly difficult to fight at close range, Melee Weapons instead become high risk, high reward tools with superior DPS compared to Pistols and Rifles.

Melee Weapons and Chainsaws are capable of killing zombies that would otherwise explode upon being killed by a firearm (for example, the Bloat) without causing them to detonate. They also ignore all PvE armor by default, meaning they will bypass any protection employed by zombies to directly damage them.

Requirements[]

Melee Weapons require 79 Critical Hit to achieve the maximum critical chance of 80%. Aside from Stealth which increases Melee damage, other stats are completely irrelevant as far as melee performance is concerned: Strength is never required by any Melee Weapon (nor does it increase their damage), Accuracy does not affect their precision or range, and Reloading is unneeded because Melee Weapons do not run out of ammunition.

Looting/Scouting[]

Melee Weapons are ideal for loot runs, primarily due to two facts:

  • Low Aggro: Silent and potent, melee weapons do not generate noise that can attract enemies on screen.
    • Natural aggro spikes will still occur even when using only melee weapons, however.
  • Ammo-free Combat: Melee Weapons do not use ammo by their very nature, and so are free to employ, reducing the cost per trip and saving you valuable inventory space.

Circling is the primary tactic for using Melee Weapons and Chainsaw against small amount of enemies in a limited amount of space, and will prove to be effective against even the most powerful of bosses, as shown in the video to the right. The tactics involves 2 steps:

  1. Dodge the zombie's attack by walking or sprinting to the side of their attack instead of backpedaling, allowing you to stay close to them for your own melee attack.
  2. While the zombie is recovering from their attack, go in and attack them, ideally in the back to facilitate further circling if the zombie is still alive.

Energy management, the amount of threats and spaces available serve as factors that should be mentioned in while circling. Sprinting is much faster compared to walking, and having a decent amount of energy available makes it much safer for you to dodge, rush in to exploit recovering zombie, as well as fleeing if things go south. Having too many zombies and too little amount of space can complicate circling attempts, as they can greatly decrease the amount of space that you can dodge with - it is recommended to try to round the zombies into a single crowd, and then use circling tactics in a more open space to slowly this them out.

Melee Weapon users should exercise caution when dealing with the following type of foes:

  • Zombies with vomit attack are capable of outranging Melee Weapons, but also have to stand still for an extended amount of range to do so. Consider sidestepping to bait out the vomit attack and then close in from the side, instead of backpedaling like with normal enemies.
  • While Melee Weapons are capable of killing exploding zombies without causing them to detonate, using them in team fights can still be risky due to other firearm-using players capable of blowing them up anyway. It is advised to either switch to a firearm, or fight alone in another location in these situations.
  • Sirens pose the greatest amount of threat to Melee Weapon wielders as it is nearly impossible to eliminate one if it has spotted you from afar, and Melee Weapons are very poor at handling large crowds. If there is one with a good chance of spotting you nearby, consider using terrain to limit the chance of it spotting you, or making a beeline to it while temporarily ignoring other zombies. If a Siren spotted you and alerted nearby zombies, switching to a firearm is advisable.

One final piece of advise: Due to how critical hits work in DF, melee weapons are capable of advancing the critical pattern for free by just swinging at thin air. Thus, it might be a good idea to keep a counter in your head on the critical pattern progress and "reload" critical hits by swinging away the non-critical ones; for example, with the maximum critical chance of 80%, you should swing away 1 non-critical hit after every 4 critical hits. This should allow you to guarantee that you always start an encounter with your crits ready, and eliminate smaller groups of enemies more quickly and safely.

Aggro Combat/Boss Fighting[]

Compared to Pistols and Rifles which can at least snipe the horde from afar while backpedaling, Melee Weapons are simply not designed for aggro combat at all - they lack DPS or knockback, have difficulty engaging multiple enemies, and tend to invite difficult to dodge swipes from zombies boosted from behind. In aggro situations, you would be better off trying to reach a safe space to weather the storm, finding an exit from the situation, or using another weapon altogether.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages

  • Melee Weapons are the cheapest weapons to use in the game, often costing a lot less than firearms of similar proficiency level and requiring no ammunition.
  • Lack of ammunition usage also allows more free inventory slots and more profit on looting trip.
  • Melee Weapons are the least stat demanding weapon in the game, only requiring 79 Critical Hit to reach maximum potential as opposed to firearms that would invariably require a combination of Strength, Accuracy, Critical Hit and Reloading to function properly.
  • Can kill exploding zombies without causing them to explode.
  • Can "reload" critical hits for free.
  • Can boost damage by leveling the Stealth stat.

Disadvantages

  • Usage requires getting near enemies, limiting killing speed and exposing the player to higher level of threats compared to firearms.
  • Ineffective against hordes or boss fights, especially in multiplayer.
  • Several zombie attacks are capable of outranging Melee Weapons, such as Brutes' and Irradiated Long Arms' pukes.
    • Knives in particular are disadvantaged in this regard, often getting outranged by the common Long Arms in later areas.

When completely out of ammunition, and devoid of any melee weapons, survivors are often forced to take on the undead with their bare fists as weapons. While some individuals feel that using those against the undead is more honorable or makes them feel more empowered in a fight, it is never wise to let yourself fall back on clenched fists as your only defense.

  • Players with no melee weapons, and no firearm with matching ammunition equipped will automatically default to Fists as their main weapon.

The pen knife is a small blade designed for basic everyday use, such as opening packages and cutting paper. Cheap and common, it is indeed a last resort weapon for those who run out of ammunition and have no other melee weapons. Needless to say, this weapon is not ideal for poking holes in zombies.

Improvised wooden weapons were common in the early days of the apocalypse and, despite their fragility and low power, remain so due to their cost and obtainability. The Wood Maul is one such example: Featuring a dense hardwood head, preferably made out of maple or oak, this maul can deliver skull-shattering blows to weaker infected types as well as knock stronger ones off their feet. It can also be used for a friendly game of croquet in break days.

Designed for smashing through helmets and stabbing opponents in the tight conditions of trench warfare, the trench knife was supposed to be a devastating last ditch weapon in the carnage of WWI, but was manufactured at the end of the war and became popular among the paratroopers and Marines of the US. military during WWII. That popularity remains undiminished, as survivors make use of these blades to puncture the skulls of the infected. Thought to be a tribute to "The Zombie Survival Guide" written by Max Brooks.

The wakizashi (meaning "side insertion") is a traditional Japanese sword with a shōtō blade between 30 and 60 centimetres (12 and 24 in), with an average of 46 cm (18 in). It is similar to but shorter than a katana, and usually shorter than the kodachi ("small sword"). The wakizashi was usually worn together with the katana by the samurai or swordsmen of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords were called daishō, which translates literally as "large and small". The katana was often called the sword or the long sword and the wakizashi the companion sword. Being smaller and sleeker than the Katana, the Wakizashi is ideal for slipping in and hitting the weak or undefended body parts of the infected.

A nodachi is a large two-handed Japanese sword. Nodachi approximately translates to "field sword". However, some have suggested that the meaning of "nodachi" is roughly the same as ōdachi meaning "large/great sword". A confusion between the terms has nearly made "nodachi" synonymic with the very large "ōdachi". Thus, while the original use of the term may have been to refer to any type of long battlefield sword (daitō), including the tachi, it is frequently misapplied to any type of over-sized Japanese sword. Etymology aside, this is the ultimate weapon for bifurcating zombies en masse.

An extra-ornate model of nodachi imported from Nagoya, Japan. The debate on the usefulness of decorations and engravings rages on even in the post apocalyptic world: While some dismiss them as giving no tactical advantage whatsoever, others claim that in a heated fight, it's not about the strength, but the style that matters.

This weapon is a throwback to one of the more curious weapons of the Middle Ages -- the halberd. Halberds were essentially large battle axes with a long spike on the top of the shaft--which was used like a spear to stab enemies--and another thickened, wider spike on the opposite side of the axe-blade for smashing through armor and shields. Creative blacksmiths have crafted this modern version of the halberd by adding several spikes to the top and base of the axe-blade -- hence its name, "Spiker".

An improved Spiker model, made by a hermit blacksmith residing in southeastern Fairview. Much emphasis was put on the weapon's cleaving ability, with a larger, heavier blade head and a reinforced metal shaft, while the spikes were left untouched. These changed were rumored to have stemmed from the blacksmith's frustration with the heavy bone armor often seen on SEZ infected, as well as the Spiker's inability to dismantle wooden furniture for barricading materials.

Stoneward inmates frequently engaged in turning whatever they can get their hands on into shivs, improvised bladed weapons with a focus on concealment and short range thrusting attacks. In the post apocalytic world, this art is passed on to fellow citizens, who use it to convert broken swords into deadly instruments of stabbing. These shivs are named after Piercer Frank, a former prisoner who targetted survivors travelling between Nastya's Outpost and Fort Pastor.

The Dual Blade was the result of one innovative survivor who took an interest in modifying his weapons. Desiring a sword that could cut through infected with both sides of the blade, the survivor managed to weld together a couple of broken sword blades he found in an outpost scrapyard. Testing his weapon, he made an interesting discovery-- the longer blade, taken from a Katana, was more effective at cutting through the armor of mutants such as Bones, while the shorter blade, taken from a Wakizashi, was more effective at cutting through fat and muscle tissue such as that found on Brutes. After demonstrating the performance of the unique sword to a group of blacksmiths, they quickly set about constructing copies of this versatile sword.

Since the earliest days of the outbreak, the Sledge Hammer was considered a highly powerful melee weapon against the undead. However, as the N4 virus continued to produce stronger and stronger mutations, even the mighty sledge hammer reached a point where its effectiveness fell short. Crafty engineers decided to drastically improve its damage potential by giving it a medieval makeover. The hammer head itself was completely reforged into a hollow, beveled container of heat-treated steel which was then filled with molten lead, making the hammer much heavier and giving it much more force behind each swing. The ends of the hammer head were additionally reshaped into tapered vertical wedges, dramatically increasing its potential to split infected bony armor clean open on impact. Finally, the wooden shaft was reinforced with steel banding that was then heat-treated to strengthen it. The resulting weapon from this process is more like a maul than anything else, and was christened the X-Hammer.

The events at the hidden southeastern facility proved to be a curse and a blessing: Along with releasing a new gallery of freaks to shoot at, Expedition Team also uncovered a couple of never before seen blueprints and the machinery to realize them. This has resulted in a host of quirky and exotic weapons popping up all over Secronom Bunker, available to those foolish enough the venture the southeastern frontier.

The Inquisitor is one such example: A greatsword made for an eccentric movie star, made from a "space-age" titanium alloy and fitted with golden decorations. Its real cost comes from its companion scabbard, which automatically performs cleaning duty and coats the sword in a layer of mineral oil to keep it in top shape; Science Team has modified it to augment this oil with N-9/2025 poison, giving it an extra edge against the infected.

Creation of a Bloodseeker relies on the ever elusive Experimental Part alloy, and thus may be delayed for months or sometimes even years. Thus, most Bloodseekers are now built in 2 stages, with the first resulting in the so-called Decapitator: a redesigned X-Kukri with a longer blade and heavier top end. Criticisms of the Decapitator's poor reach were eventually addressed with the addition of an extended handle, allowing it to function effectively in the SEZ until materials for its upgrade can be sourced.

Yet another eccletic mix of medieval brutality and advanced anti-zombie technology, created by Secronom with inputs from Valcrest's engineers. The Doomstar relies on a series of flared heads reinforced with Experimental Part alloy to shatter infected carapace, exposing the underlying soft flesh. After breaching, the user must then push a button to extend the spikes hidden inside the Doomstar's heads, which will then inject the target with a lethal does of N-9/2025. While undoubtably effective, this novel mechanism also means the Doomstar is a cumbersome, hard to manufacture and fragile weapon, requiring great melee experience and careful usage to avoid damaging the weapon's internals.

In the continuing efforts of Fairview's blacksmiths to make use of scrapped equipment for crafting new weapons, the Gut Splitter is one of the more unique weapons to emerge. Crafted from one of the blades of an old battle axe, the Gut Splitter is very similar to a Chinese wind-and-fire wheel in functional design. You can expect to get your hands extremely bloody if you use one-- the Gut Splitter's simplistic design is a beauty.

No one knows just what the outpost Blacksmiths had in mind when they designed this weapon. A strange combination of axe and scythe, the weapon doesn't seem to be based on any known weapon in recorded history. However, the perplexity it induced among survivors when first unveiled has quickly been dispelled -- the Sharktail has been found to be a devastating weapon in the hands of a survivor with proper melee expertise. The twin blades attached to the weapon's forked head slice through bone and flesh almost effortlessly. This weapon definitely gives a new meaning to the phrase "sharks in the water"...

Like all of us, this simple machete has seen better days, from the day it was made to the day it appeared on a store with its wax still on. Like all of us, it has experienced so much joy; starting with just a crow, it has sliced and ripped through hordes of infected with its sharp, keen edge. Like all of us, it has seen so much suffering and losses, its blade now cracked and drenched in blood and its owner long forgotten. Perhaps it might have wished to turn back time, to be young and carefree again, and see a more peaceful world in which it never has to fight so viciously ever again, but that is a silly wish that can never be fulfilled.

And yet, just like this machete, all the joy and pain has forged us, made us deadlier and prepare us for whatever life can throw at us. Forward warriors, for the joy of life is the most valuable thing we can have and we should fight to our last breath to protect it.

Happy 15th Anniversary, Dead Frontier!

After discovering the experimental technologies developed by the bandits that proliferate in Fairview, the X-Dusk set was the first to be adapted to them and the result is more than surprising. Dawn Kris is how this knife has been baptized, by combining these parts with the old X-Dusk Kris the result was a creation of a knife capable of stabbing any infected, mutant or survivor who stands in the way of whoever carries this masterfully crafted knive. Created through AdminPwn crafting system only for those who meet the requirements (status and monetary, more than anything) to be creditors to one copy.

To further improve the versatility of the X-Dusk set, engineers and gunsmiths in charge of AdminPwn were looking for ways to do it, until they found the solution through the different factions of bandits that inhabit Fairview. Although these nice neighbors do not hesitate to commit vile acts against the more civilized population of Fairview, it is also common knowledge that they are capable of developing their own technologies and weapons and thanks to this there is now the so-called Dawn set. The Dawn Blade was created from the combination of the experimental parts found mainly in the armor of a group of murdered bandits, thanks to this never-before-seen technology it was possible to combine it with the first X-Dusk weapons created (including the X-Dusk Razor). Through this process the Dawn Blade was conceived with a cut like never before, now capable of cutting anyone who gets in its way without much effort. The improvement method to create this weapon is only available to the best survivors with the accounting capital, offered by AdminPwn himself. Does not follow the usual naming convention, due to the existence of the Dawn Razor. Limited Edition Weapon.

A machete is a large weapon, similar to a knife, what characterizes this worn-out variant is the stains of rusty blood of its previous victims. It is said that this weapon belonged to a serial killer on the outskirts of Fairview who wore a hockey mask and liked to dismember his victims, although these are only rumors (probably). The truth is that as long as it serves to defend yourself from the dangers of Fairview it doesn't matter much who has previously carried this weapon (or maybe yes, who knows).

Frank not being the smarts among us, seemed to have mistaken this brutally wicked, murderous axe for a candy cane. I'll leave the end result of his poor decision making skills to your imagination. This powerful axe can slice through metal, wood, I've ever seen it used to pop the car off of a seized up Mason Jar, which is when I knew how potentially dangerous it truly was. With a large sweeping radius due to sheer size and the knockback it offers from just how damn powerful it is, this weapon will suit you well in your journeys. Merry Christmas, survivor.

In the early days of the apocalypse, once settlements started being established, there was a massive demand for steel; for the creation of tools, preservation of machinery and forging of much needed weaponry. It was from the early looting and foraging expeditions that heavy-duty ship anchors were able to make their way into the heart of Fairview city, a place far removed from any body of water. Now, normally, the idea of using these giant hunks of steel as some sort of hand wielded weaponry is far in the realms of fiction right? But fortunately for us, we have superhumans strengthened by a mutagen word-ending virus. Now, drop anchor and bash away!
