Cowboy's Guide to Pistols[]

Pistols, alongside Rifles, form the 2 categories of ranged looting weapons in Dead Frontier. These are your go-to when you want to cost efficiently and quietly eliminate enemies from afar. Just like Rifles, Pistol do not increase aggro but still draw the attention of the zombies on your screen, who will hear the shots and attack you.

Pistols are usually grouped into two categories: Revolvers and Semi-Automatics. Both category has Very High critical chance and High accuracy:

  • Semi-Automatics are characterized by a moderate ammo capacity ranging from 7 to 35 rounds, faster firing and reloading speed. These have low stat requirements and offer a balance of ammo efficiency, crowd control and killing speed. Thus, Semi-Automatics form a good benchmark to judge other looting weapons by.
  • Revolvers are characterized by a small ammo capacity ranging from 5 to 24 rounds, slower firing and reloading speeds. Overall, Revolvers are more stat intensive, but compensate with superior DPS and ammo efficiency.

The balance between Pistols and Rifles changes as you progress through the game: Early on, Rifles deal much more damage than Pistols, at the cost of rarer/more expensive ammunition, and greater Critical stat requirement. At 110+ proficiency, these differences cease to exist; the choice then comes largely down to personal preferences, with Rifles being better at 1HKOing tough zombies with low damage boost, and Pistols being better at quickly killing low HP enemies and controlling crowds.

Requirements[]

Every survivor begins with 5 Pistol proficiency, which is enough to use the first two pistols: Beta Tomcat (starting weapon for all survivors), and Williams PPK.

All pistols have High Accuracy, meaning 59 accuracy is needed for Reliable Aim On-screen, 69 accuracy for Perfect Aim On-screen/Reliable Aim Off-screen, and 79 accuracy Perfect Aim Off-screen. All pistols require 79 Critical to reach their maximum critical hit chance of 80%.

Looting/Scouting[]

In the Inner City, pistols are a common sight on looting runs due to their easily replaceable ammo and decent damage output. Some general tips:

  • Pistols with average firing speed are rather versatile and can be used well in a number of different situations. Coupled with the fact that they are quiet, looting with pistols is a good idea as it will keep aggro down.
  • Just like Melee or any other weapon, circling is also an effective tactic with Pistols.
  • As with all guns, take the opportunity to reload if no zombies are around. It doesn’t take very long, and having a full magazine when you are mobbed by multiple zombies can make all the difference. One trick is to hit "R" just before you transition to another screen, as this results in having your gun reloaded once you reach the next block.

Aggro Combat/Boss Fighting[]

While not ideal for fighting aggro, Pistols and Rifles can buy you time by sniping/staggering enemies from afar while backpedalling. They are excellent weapons for tackling bosses, thanks to their high single target DPS for low ammo cost, and their high accuracy allowing for flexibility in positioning against boss attacks.

  • The standard method to boss fighting with Pistol/Rifle is to run laps around the entire block without stopping. Eventually, the aggro will be left behind, leaving only the boss to be focus fired on.
  • Alternatively, find a length of wall/fence to trap the horde behind. As long as no trapped zombie is killed, the game will not attempt to spawn more and allow you to solo the boss in relative peace.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages

  • Uses handgun ammo, which usually have a higher stack capacity (1600 vs 1200) compared to rifle ammo. Handgun ammo is also used by Sub-Machine Guns.
  • Early on, Pistols have Very High (79 Critical required) instead of Rifle's High (112 Critical required) Critical Chance. Additionally, earlygame handgun ammos are much more common and cheaper than rifle rounds. Thus, Pistols make for a cheap, non stat demanding ranged choice for lower level players.
  • Better crowd control capability and killing speed against weaker zombies compared to Rifles.
    • Scales better with damage boost from Drugs/Implants: boosted Pistols are capable of killing multiple medium to high HP zombies in a few seconds, while Rifles are limited by their fire rate.

Disadvantages

  • Lower damage than Rifles in early game.
  • Most revolvers have a low magazine capacity and slow reload speeds
  • Higher firing rate leads to greater chance of making noise and attracting horde.
  • Requires more ammunition than Rifles to take on high HP threats. If you want to 1HKO them instead, it takes much less damage boost to do so with a Rifle than with a Pistol.

As per Nastya's Holdout policy, every newly arrived survivor is given one of these antique pistols for basic survival and firearms training. Heavily worn out and prone to jam, these are meant to be returned to The Yard when better weapons are acquired - nonetheless, many have attested to keeping them long after as a memorabilia.

All new survivors start with an untradeable Beta Tomcat, for self-defense and training.

However, due to the rarity of this ammunition, most looted pistols were converted to chamber the .32 round - such a shame, as the 5.7mm might have done a lot better against the heavily 'armored' zombies in Fairview.

A double-action revolver produced by Smith and Wesson, firing the .500 S&W cartridge. The firearm's advanced design helps in counteracting recoil felt by the shooter; this includes the sheer weight of the firearm, use of rubber grips, the forward balance, and the use of a compensator. On certain S&W Performance Center models, the compensator is replaced with a full muzzle brake. Marketed as the most powerful handgun in the world, it is considered by some zombie hunters to be overkill; but then again, there is no such thing as overkill when the infected are involved.

Real Name: Desert Eagle
A massive pistol designed primarily for the United States' long-range target- and silhouette-shooting pistol market. It became popular despite its weight, massive recoil, and small magazine capacity. This pistol has become somewhat of a legend through its common use in Hollywood action flicks and various video games. It's definitely not a pistol for novice survivors, but in the hands of an experienced gunman, it is a powerful menace to the undead.

A massive handgun chambered in the .454 Casull round, the Bull has been used to kill animals like buffalo, bears and elephants. Despite the S&W 500 firing a larger cartridge, the Bull appears to have been improved upon by various weaponsmiths in the city with an odd muzzle break that cuts down the recoil in half. It also carries a distinctive red rubber stripe along its grip.

This classic cowboy revolver was found near an unrecognizable corpse during the outbreak, albeit in an unusual position: The corpse was mangled beyond comprehension yet the pistol was spotless and pointed at them, suggesting that someone else had executed them before ditching the weapon. Perhaps it was left behind because of ammo scarcity - a common issue in the early days of the outbreak, well before backyard gunsmiths and hand-loaded cartridges become a common sight.

The .475 Wildey Magnum is a semi-automatic pistol that made its pop culture debut as the protagonist's signature sidearm in Death Wish 3. The .475 Wildey Magnum was purposefully designed to be a hunting firearm, and is built heavier than most handguns to allow it to handle breech pressures over 48,000 psi. The body is made out of stainless steel that comes in the Survivor and Hunter models; the only difference between these 2 is the finish, with the Hunter having a matte and the Survivor having a satin finish.

Real Name: RSh-12
The RSh-12 assault revolver (Револьвер Штурмовой РШ-12) is a somewhat mysterious creation, supposedly made upon requests from elite Russian CT units. It is often described as an "anti-materiel revolver", intended to be used alongside a riot shield to destroy locks and protected targets in CQB. For this, the RSh-12 employs the full-sized 12.7×55mm STs-130 sniper rifle round, and fires from the bottom cylinder to reduce barrel climb.

This revolver was made by Fairview's gunsmiths on commission by a group of snipers in Nastya's Holdout. It was originally intended as a high caliber last-resort weapon for snipers and other marksmen, but one of the snipers found that the heavy .55 caliber round was good for picking off zombies from a long-range. Hence, gunsmiths attached a spare high-powered scope to the top of the revolver, enabling it to act as a compact, deadly backup marksman's weapon.

The Vlock XD11 was created by a then young and promising gunsmith, who took the request of repairing an ex-SWAT's Glock 22 as an opportunity to instead upgrade it to the newly-developed .55 pistol cartridge. The result, while far from ideal, impressed just enough that Precinct 13 ordered conversion for a sizable cache of Glock 22s for Wasteland expedition duty. The gunsmith aimed to further refine the Vlock's design in hopes of an affordable .55 semi auto possible for the common people of Fairview, but his untimely demise prevented that from ever being realized.

Seemly based on the 1866 Derringer, this revolver uses the advantage of dual barrels for multiple shots(?) per trigger. The gun is fed by tube in a manner similar to the Immolator, allowing multiple bullets to be fitted into a barrel. Gold damascening and engravings were liberally applied in the production of this pistol; feels like a rather wasteful choice in a devastated city, but it doesn't matter, your enemies will get a bling of death, get it?

This gun was built off a scrapped Desert Fox, by refitting the handle with that of a revolver's and well kept secured with duct tape, often joked as "the best material in the world". Unlike reloading a real Desert Fox, the magazine is slipped into the gun itself by flipping the body open, inserting the mag into the body and then closing it. The gun produces a lot of heat when fired, therefore, a heatsink is attached below the gun to prevent the gun from exploding. Railroad spikes are used in place of blades, but the spikes don't last long as a bayonet.

A peculiar type of modified SIG P226 pistol, whose blueprints and parts were recently "graciously gifted" from a group of bunny-themed crazed vigilante. This pistol is a far cry from its pre-outbreak counterparts: Multiple modifications were applied in an attempt to make a medium sized pistol to fire the .55 round, including an expanded chamber reinforced with the same alloy seen in what the common survivors call "Experimental Parts", and a limiter that only allows it to fire as fast as an average revolver. Additionally, the pistol was fitted with a heavy duty suppressor also made from "Experimental Parts" alloy, which when tested with standard .55 cartridge, reduces the muzzle report from "ear bleeding" to "my eardrums still hurt but at least it's less audible from afar".

The X-Python was one of the first weapons in an effort to deliver new weapon systems based on the genetic materials of the Devil Hound: The experimental N-9/2025 ammunition type, made into a small variety of lower powered cartridges, contains a biological agent derived from Devil Hearts that bursts into a zombie's blood stream upon impact and violently interact with N4-infected cells, gradually sending the target into septic shock and death with sufficient dosage (read: bullets). The X-Python itself received some upgrade in the form of an enlarged cylinder, lengthened barrel and a walnut stock, turning it into a fearsome carbine with the looks to match.

While novel-sounding, the idea of a belt-fed repeater actually dates back to the 19th century with the Treeby rifle, which feeds from a linked chain of chambers that each contains a percussion charge. The Chain Revolver is an entirely original design though; production involves taking a Colt single-action revolver and somehow replacing its original feed system with a disintegrating chain of .50AE rounds. By fanning the hammer, experienced gunslingers are able to take advantage of the increased capacity and provide a volume of fire comparable to most modern machine guns.

Born in the early 2010s, the QR22 was among one of the few attempts to usurp the Desert Fox's titles of "one handed wrist-breaker" and "ultimate compensator". The weapon garnered much hype thanks to its inclusion in the popular Modern Warfighter(TM) series of FPS, but only saw very limited production before the start of the outbreak.

The QR22 finally managed to find a market in the post-apocalyptic world, thanks to its well built frame and its ability to fire the standard Fairview .55 with little modification. The QR22 is nicknamed "Obsidian" in honor of the creator of the Vlock XD11, who dreamed of a widely available .55 semi-auto pistol for the people but tragically died before he could see that becoming a reality.

The French GIGN were known for their tremendous flexibility in weaponry, offering operatives a wide variety of guns and allowing them to choose at their own discretion for any given mission. The Manurhin MR73 Sniper was a particularly exotic option: A mastercrafted .357 Magnum revolver designed to be a literal "pocket sniper", complete with an 8-inch (20.32cm) barrel, bipod and low-powered (for sniper rifle standards) scope. The MR73 Sniper was designed to be a compact alternative to high-powered snipers in urban situations, where a smaller profile is desired and overpenetration from sniper rounds is frowned upon.

The MR550 "Rhea" appears to be an evolution of this concept, with test runs being done in both EU and US pre-outbreak. Blueprints suggested that the MR550 was capable of firing various types of ammunition after a cylinder change, ranging from the standard .357 to a prototype .550 APEI cartridge specifically designed for anti-materiel purpose. Thanks to this versatility, Fairview residents were quickly able to adapt the MR550 to fire post-apocalypse .55 pistol rounds, though with significant accuracy reduction due to the ammunition's shoddy quality.

A crude weapon, created from the remains of the unfortunate who fall daily at the hands of the hordes. This bizarre pistol has been chambered to fire in a 3-round system, equipped with the .38 caliber and a quick reload system making it a reliable weapon. Due to the firing system used, it has been proven that this handgun is capable of penetrating the calcified armor of the mutants that abound in Fairview, as well as the different types of armor that currently exist making it a good option to hunt larger targets or use it in self defense against the not so friendly bandit groups.

Designed as a companion to the Breacher 730, the Wyvern RX8 is an antiquated flare revolver that has been converted to fire Dragon's Breath munition. Most of its original components were reinforced or rebuilt for greater accuracy and heat resistance, including the replacement of the original cylinder with a brand new one made entirely out of Experimental Part alloy. The Wyvern has earned the nickname "The Kiln" for its devasataing power against fire vulnerable infected, its utility as a signal flare and celebratory fireworks launcher, and also its tendancy to burn the hands of unskilled/careless survivor.

Through the new cutting-edge technologies developed by the different factions not so attached to the laws of Fairview, new improvements have been made to existing elite weaponry and the Dawn Enforcer is proof of this. Using experimental equipment and blueprints of an unnamed pistol looted from a raided bandit camp on the outskirts of the city, AdminPwn and his group of engineers and gunsmiths have been able to upgrade all X-Dusk weaponry to a whole new level. By combining these newly discovered technologies, this new weapon was able to achieve grueling firing-speeds, generating increased ballistic damage from the .55 caliber ammunition making it one of the first post apocalyptic fully AP weapons available. Field tests have shown that this weapon is capable of penetrating any type of armor known to date (either human-made or the product of Nerotonin-4 mutations), Due to the shiny silver color these new weapons take on when exposed to the upgrade process they have been renamed to "Dawn Set" thus resulting in the creation of the Dawn Enforcer. This weapon is only forged for those who prove to be the best of the best and of course, who have the necessary income to make the necessary conversion (which is not cheap at all).
