Cowboy's Guide to Pistols
In Dead Frontier, Pistols are typically used as primary weapons and are especially effective in hybrid builds rather than critical builds due to their low critical requirements. Pistol ammo is very common to find in the Inner City and therefore requires fewer expenses as compared to other weapons. Just like Rifles, these weapons do not increase aggro but still draw the attention of the zombies on your screen, who will hear the shots and attack you.
Pistols are usually grouped into two categories: Revolvers and Semi-Automatics:
- Semi-Automatics are characterized by a moderate ammo capacity ranging from 7 to 35 rounds, faster firing and reloading speeds, yet only high critical chance and lower damage per shot than revolvers of the same caliber.
- Revolvers are characterized by a small ammo capacity ranging from 5 to 24 rounds, slower firing and reloading speeds, yet very high critical chance and higher damage per shot than semi-automatic pistols of the same caliber. In other words, more bang for your buck.
Requirements
Every survivor begins with 5 Pistol proficiency, which is enough to use the first three pistols: Beta Tomcat (starting weapon for all survivors), Williams PPK, and the Gerring HP.
All pistols have Average Accuracy, meaning 80 accuracy is needed for Reliable Aim On-screen, 100 accuracy for Perfect Aim On-screen / Reliable Aim Off-screen, and 124 accuracy Perfect Aim Off-screen. Revolvers require 79 Critical to reach their maximum critical hit chance of 80%, while semi-automatics require 112 instead.
Combat Outside - Loot/Scout Run
In the Inner City, pistols are a common sight on looting runs due to their easily replaceable ammo and decent damage output. Some general tips:
- Pistols with average firing speed are rather versatile and can be used well in a number of different situations. Coupled with the fact that they are quiet, looting with pistols is a good idea as it will keep aggro down.
- Just like Melee or any other weapon, circling is also an effective tactic with Pistols.
- As with all guns, take the opportunity to reload if no zombies are around. It doesn’t take very long, and having a full magazine when you are mobbed by multiple zombies can make all the difference. One trick is to hit "R" just before you transition to another screen, as this results in having your gun reloaded once you reach the next block.
Aggro Combat (Multiplayer)
Like Melees and Rifles, Pistols are weapons designed for looting, not fighting aggro. Thus, if aggro is encountered while you are only armed with a pistol, your best bet is to try to reach a safe space to weather the storm, find an exit from the situation, or use another weapon altogether.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
- Uses handgun ammo, which usually have a lower cost and a higher stack capacity (800 vs 600) compared to rifle ammo. Handgun ammo is also used by Sub-Machine Guns.
- Early on, Revolvers are the only weapons to have Very High (79 Critical required) instead of High (112 Critical required) Critical Chance, making it an excellent choice for lower leveled players.
- Semi-Automatics offers comparatively higher crowd control capability compared to Revolvers and all other Rifles.
Disadvantages
- They require more accuracy than rifles to hit targets reliably off screen.
- Most starting pistols deal lower damage per second compared to rifles depending on the ammo type being used.
- Most revolvers have a low magazine capacity and slow reload speeds (Excluding Corpse Shooter).

Real Name: S&W 500 A double-action revolver produced by Smith and Wesson, firing the .500 S&W cartridge. The firearm's advanced design helps in counteracting recoil felt by the shooter; this includes the sheer weight of the firearm, use of rubber grips, the forward balance, and the use of a compensator. On certain S&W Performance Center models, the compensator is replaced with a full muzzle brake. Marketed as the most powerful handgun in the world, it is considered by some zombie hunters to be overkill; but then again, there is no such thing as overkill when the infected are involved. The .475 Wildey Magnum was purposefully designed to be a hunting firearm, and is built heavier than most handguns to allow it to handle breech pressures over 48,000 psi. This revolver was made by Fairview's gunsmiths on commission by a group of snipers in Nastya's Holdout. It was originally intended as a high caliber last-resort weapon for snipers and other marksmen, but one of the snipers found that the heavy .55 caliber round was good for picking off zombies from a long-range. Hence, gunsmiths attached a spare high-powered scope to the top of the revolver, enabling it to act as a compact, deadly backup marksman's weapon. Weapon Type: Revolver Added February 18th, 2013. |

The Vlock XD11 was created by a then young and promising gunsmith, who took the request of repairing an ex-SWAT's Glock 22 as an opportunity to instead upgrade it to the newly-developed .55 pistol cartridge. The result, while far from ideal, impressed just enough that Precinct 13 ordered conversion for a sizable cache of Glock 22s for Wasteland expedition duty. The gunsmith aimed to further refine the Vlock's design in hopes of an affordable .55 semi auto possible for the common people of Fairview, but his untimely demise prevented that from ever being realized. Seemly based on the 1866 Derringer, this revolver uses the advantage of dual barrels for multiple shots(?) per trigger. The gun is fed by tube in a manner similar to the Immolator, allowing multiple bullets to be fitted into a barrel. Gold damascening and engravings were liberally applied in the production of this pistol; feels like a rather wasteful choice in a devastated city, but it doesn't matter, your enemies will get a bling of death, get it? This gun was built off a scrapped Desert Fox, by refitting the handle with that of a revolver's and well kept secured with duct tape, often joked as "the best material in the world". Unlike reloading a real Desert Fox, the magazine is slipped into the gun itself by flipping the body open, inserting the mag into the body and then closing it. The gun produces a lot of heat when fired, therefore, a heatsink is attached below the gun to prevent the gun from exploding. Railroad spikes are used in place of blades, but the spikes don't last long as a bayonet. Weapon Type: Semi-Auto This weapon could only be bought from the Credit Shop for 1,800 credits (1,500 for Gold Members). It was on sale from May 15th, 2015 until June 10th, 2015. |

The X-Python was one of the first weapons in an effort to deliver new weapon systems based on the genetic materials of the Devil Hound: The experimental N-9/2025 ammunition type, made into a small variety of lower powered cartridges, contains a biological agent derived from Devil Hearts that bursts into a zombie's blood stream upon impact and violently interact with N4-infected cells, gradually sending the target into septic shock and death with sufficient dosage (read: bullets). The X-Python itself received some upgrade in the form of an enlarged cylinder, lengthened barrel and a walnut stock, turning it into a fearsome carbine with the looks to match. While novel-sounding, the idea of a belt-fed repeater actually dates back to the 19th century with the Treeby rifle, which feeds from a linked chain of chambers that each contains a percussion charge. The Chain Revolver is an entirely original design though; production involves taking a Colt single-action revolver and somehow replacing its original feed system with a disintegrating chain of .50AE rounds. By fanning the hammer, experienced gunslingers are able to take advantage of the increased capacity and provide a volume of fire comparable to most modern machine guns. This weapon can only be bought from the Credit Shop for 1,200 credits (1,000 for Gold Members). It is on sale from October 27th, 2020 until November 8th, 2020. |

Born in the early 2010s, the QR22 was among one of the few attempts to usurp the Desert Fox's titles of "one handed wrist-breaker" and "ultimate compensator". The weapon garnered much hype thanks to its inclusion in the popular Modern Warfighter(TM) series of FPS, but only saw very limited production before the start of the outbreak. The QR22 finally managed to find a market in the post-apocalyptic world, thanks to its well built frame and its ability to fire the standard Fairview .55 with little modification. The QR22 is nicknamed "Obsidian" in honor of the creator of the Vlock XD11, who dreamed of a widely available .55 semi-auto pistol for the people but tragically died before he could see that becoming a reality. The French GIGN were known for their tremendous flexibility in weaponry, offering operatives a wide variety of guns and allowing them to choose at their own discretion for any given mission. The Manurhin MR73 Sniper was a particularly exotic option: A mastercrafted .357 Magnum revolver designed to be a literal "pocket sniper", complete with an 8-inch (20.32cm) barrel, bipod and low-powered (for sniper rifle standards) scope. The MR73 Sniper was designed to be a compact alternative to high-powered snipers in urban situations, where a smaller profile is desired and overpenetration from sniper rounds is frowned upon. The MR550 "Rhea" appears to be an evolution of this concept, with test runs being done in both EU and US pre-outbreak. Blueprints suggested that the MR550 was capable of firing various types of ammunition after a cylinder change, ranging from the standard .357 to a prototype .550 APEI cartridge specifically designed for anti-materiel purpose. Thanks to this versatility, Fairview residents were quickly able to adapt the MR550 to fire post-apocalypse .55 pistol rounds, though with significant accuracy reduction due to the ammunition's shoddy quality.
