Rifle-caliber Machine Guns

Machine Guns and You

Rifle-caliber Machine Guns form the "heavy" spectrum of Machine Guns in the game, contrasting the "lighter", weaker, more controllable, handgun ammo using Sub-Machine Guns. Rifle-caliber Machine Guns are split into 3 categories that differ in firing rate and overall DPS:

  • Assault Rifles: Assault Rifles were once the standard offensive weapon for modern troops. In DF, with the exception of the Hammerhead 47 and the X-AK 47, Assault Rifles are effectively lower-leveled Rifle-caliber Machine Guns, having lower DPS, rate of fire and much poorer knockback, but faster reload speed compared to the other 2 types. In the Marketplace, Assault Rifles are grouped with Sub-Machine Guns in the Light Machineguns search category, while Heavy Machine Guns and Miniguns form the Heavy Machineguns search category.
  • Heavy Machine Guns: A misnomer used to refer to the various light machine guns used by survivors in the game. Heavy Machine Guns can be said to be the first truly "heavy" weapon available, sporting Super Fast Firing Speed (8.571 rounds per second) compared to the 6.667 rounds per second of ARs and SMGs, as well as increased DPS output and knockback that can allow them to hold ground for extended period of time. Heavy Machine Guns typically have large magazine capacity, which is somewhat balanced by their Slow Reload Speed.
  • Miniguns: A term used to all Gatling-style rotaty barrel machine guns. Although they employ epic ammo consumption rate (F***ing Fast! Firing Speed), epic stat consumption, extremely low accuracy, and extremely slow reloading speed, they simply pay it out with extreme raw power and knock back. Similar to Shotguns, Miniguns are capable of firing multiple pellets with each shot, with the pellets themselves having a maximum spread of 30 degree that is completely unaffected by Accuracy. Miniguns have an even smaller critical chance compared to their peers, and applies critical damage to all pellets in a critical shot (although only 1 of them will be highlighted yellow)

Regardless of type, all rifle-caliber Machines Guns suffer from a large number of limitations designed to balance their destructive power and high capacity: The poorest accuracy lever possible in the game at Very Low Accuracy, an extremely high stat requirement in 100 Strength and a rather poor reloading speed that gets worse as you move on to heavier variants. Ironically, their strength of having the highest rate of fire in the game can also be considered to be a curse, as this means that you will be chewing through expensive rifle ammunition at an extremely rapid pace.

Requirements

30 points of Strength and 40 points of Machine Gun proficiency are required to wield the first 4 Assault Rifles: The M16, FM FNC, SA80, Mesa ACR, while the first Heavy Machine Gun, the FM Mitrail, requires 80 Strength and 90 Machine Gun proficiency. All Miniguns require 100 Strength and at least 100 Machine Gun proficiency.

Rifle-caliber Machine Guns are infamously known for their stat guzzling characteristics, requiring very high Strength to wield the most heavy of HMGs/Miniguns and significant Accuracy investment to mitigate their accuracy issue. Reloading is useful for counteracting Assault Rifles' small capacity, but are not as needed when wielding HMGs/Miniguns due to their naturally larger capacity.

Usage Tips

Looting/Scouting

With a high chance of raising an aggro spike, low accuracy and high maintenance cost, rifle-caliber Machine Guns are perhaps the poorest weapon possible to bring during a looting trip. They should only be used as a self defense weapons against a sudden rush of zombie or to hold down loot spots, and should only be used sparingly in order to save ammunition and consolidate your looting profits.

Aggro Combat

Rifle-caliber Machine Guns stand out as the most powerful and heavy choice possible for an aggro combat situation. While other weapons (and Assault Rifles) are often forced to move around frequently in order to evade zombies, HMGs and Miniguns are fully capable of holding down a location for an extended amount of time and punching large holes into the horde formation, as long as you have the cash and ammunition to feed it:

  • The most important tip when using rifle-caliber Machine Guns against aggro is just to bring as much ammunition as possible. Rifle-caliber Machine Guns go through ammo like there is no tomorrow, and in an intense firefight, you can go through a shockingly large number of bullets in a short period of time. A secondary weapon like a pistol can also be useful, just in case you need to retreat for even more ammo.
  • As rifle-caliber Machine Guns have rather low accuracy, effective use requires getting close to the horde, but not so close as to the point where the chance of being harmed by exploding or puking zombies is significant.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

  • High DPS.
  • HMGs and Miniguns have the greatest knockback capability and fire rate of all weapon types in the game.
  • Large magazine capacity.

Disadvantages

  • Assault Rifle have rather poor knockback power, losing out to a properly optimized Sub-Machine Gun.
  • Extremely high stat requirement.
  • Extremely high ammunition cost.
  • Very poor accuracy.

Standard US Military issue for over 40 years, the M16 has a modular design capable of accepting grenade launchers, flashlights, and lasers attachments. Renowned for its accuracy and innovative new design, but not for its reliability, a stigma it has not shaken off to this day, despite anecdotes for cleaning it. Unsurprisingly, both SWAT armories and local Navy/Marine Corps outposts yielded some fully automatic M16A3s and some M16A4 that was subsequently modified by local gunsmiths to fire fully automatic again. Good for a "last hope" weapon, but ammo isn't cheap.

Despite the graphic of the M16 showing one, the under barrel M203 grenade launcher is unusable and only serves to aid its aesthetics.

The FNC (Fusil Nouveau Type Carabine) is a 5.56mm assault rifle developed by the Belgian arms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Herstal and introduced in the late 1970s. The FNC is a selective fire weapon that uses a gas-driven piston operating system (with a long-stroke piston) and a rotary bolt locking mechanism equipped with two locking lugs that engage corresponding recesses in the barrel extension. The bolt is rotated and unlocked by the interaction of the bolt's cam pin with a camming guide contained in the bolt carrier. Overall, the mechanism strongly resembles the Kalashnikov but adapted to the more advanced design and production methods.

The SA80 (Small Arms for the 1980s) is a British family of 5.56mm small arms. It is a selective-fire, gas-operated assault rifle. Elements of its design, in particular, the bullpup configuration, come from the earlier EM-2 rifle. The L85 rifle variant of the SA80 family has been the standard issue service rifle of the British Armed Forces since 1987, replacing the L1A1 variant of the FN FAL. The improved L85A2 remains in service today. The remainder of the family comprises the L86 Light Support Weapon, the short-barrelled L22 carbine, and the L98 Cadet rifle.

The Steyr Aug is an Austrian made 5.56mm assault rifle, designed in the 1960s by Steyr Mannlicher GmbH & Co KG. The Steyr AUG (Armee-Universal-Gewehr - Universal Army Rifle) was adopted by the Austrian army in 1978 as the StG 77, where it replaced the 7.62mm StG 58 automatic rifle (a license-built FN FAL). It was very famous for its then-futuristic look. In production since 1978, it is the standard small arm of the Austrian Bundesheer and various national police units.

The name of this weapon was changed from 'Steyr AUG' to 'Stell AUG' on January 24th, 2010.

The legendary Automatic Kalashnikov Model 47 was one of the first true assault rifles. Due to its relative cheapness and incredible reliability, it is by far the most widely used assault rifle in the world. With its powerful 7.62x39mm round, the AK-47 can penetrate fabric armor, as well as penetrate light cover to hit targets hiding behind it. A shortened variant of the M16, the M4 was commonly used by the U.S. military since the early 1990s. Both lighter and shorter than its predecessor, the M4 almost completely replaced the M16 in the US Army. Unfortunately, the majority of these weapons were thought to be stockpiled at armories outside of Fairview when the outbreak occurred -- until soldiers uncovered a previously-unnoticed cache of them in the back rooms of an abandoned Fairview arsenal. Since then, gunsmiths have been scrambling to convert the copies of this weapon found in the many Army supply trucks scattered throughout the city.

Determined to build an assault rifle that made most other assault rifles look like cap guns, Fairview's gunsmiths finally cranked out a gun that screams raw power, bordering on overkill. As the first custom-built weapon to surpass the AK-47 in both damaging power and magazine capacity, the gun was also christened with the same identifying number as the AK-47 itself. Ironically, the gun seems to have been built on the same structural design as the M16. True to its name, though, the weapon hammers zombies and anything else in its path with a relentless stream of 14mm rounds.

In the seemingly endless arms race between Fairview's engineers scrambling to build ever-stronger weapons and the hordes of infected developing deadlier and deadlier mutations, many engineers have turned to rebuild old preexisting weapons into something much more powerful. The X-AK 47 is one of the results of their labor. Engineers decided to revamp the traditional AK 47's design from an assault rifle to something more closely resembling a light machine gun. This new take on a classic weapon features a much higher-capacity 100-round ammo drum instead of a magazine, and a muzzle-mounted bipod allowing a survivor to maintain stable, continuous fire from a stationary position without having to compensate as much for recoil when aiming. Additionally, the gun's retooled chamber and barrel allow for much higher muzzle pressure and muzzle velocity, resulting in the gun's 7.5mm rounds possessing much higher penetrative power than what would be possible with a standard AK 47. Survivors wanting a powerful machine gun but not wanting to burn through loads of ammo will find that this gun suits their needs perfectly.

This weapon cannot be looted, but its materials can be obtained in the Inner City through looting and killing special IC Devil Hounds that spawn once per day (Due to a glitch, Wasteland DH will also occasionally drop Devil Hearts when the IC DH is active)

The Minimi is a Belgian-made squad automatic weapon that fires the NATO standard 5.56x45mm round, although a 7.62 x 51mm NATO variant exists. Though it's usually fed from 200-round plastic drums, or 100- or 200-round cloth drums, the weapon is capable of accepting STANAG 4179 magazines. The weapon was adopted by the US Army and Marine Corps as the M249, replacing the M60 in most roles.

The M60, officially the United States Machine Gun, Caliber 7.62 mm, M60, is a family of American general-purpose machine guns firing 7.62×51mm NATO cartridges from a disintegrating belt of M13 links. There are several types of live ammunition approved for use in the M60, including ball, tracer, and armor-piercing rounds. A very prominent machine gun throughout the Vietnam War, it was produced in 1957 up to current times. Throughout its times, it has been produced in many variants, and still in use with various militaries around the world.

Destructive and mysterious, no one knows how this weapon was created, who actually designed and built it, or where it even came from. Rumor has it that this heavy machine gun was crafted from the bodies of slain survivors that were never recovered. But, as it seems that only a few highly secretive survivors have been able to find this unique weapon and use it, nothing is confirmed. Should you be lucky enough to get your hands on one of these, there is virtually no being, living or dead, that can hope to stand in your way. Be warned, however, that this weapon possesses a mind of its own: It may turn against survivors who are not able to use it correctly. One only has to ask any of the survivors who have lost a finger (or more) trying to maintain it, or been burned by the red-hot bullet casings it spat in their face, to see the proof.

This weapon could only be bought from the Credit Shop for 2,000 credits (1,750 for Gold Members). It was on sale from November 19th, 2012 until December 31st, 2012.

When you're looking to knock down a few hundred zombies, you'll want to look towards the X-Dusk MAG. This machine was created by some seriously intelligent individuals. The Vulcan is a hydraulically or pneumatically driven, six-barreled, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style cannon, which fires various ammunition types at an extremely high rate. Yet somehow, the gunsmiths of Fairview city have managed to rig this machine to fire the much more common .50 BMG ammo, making firing the Vulcan possible in the condition of the city. The M61 and its derivatives have been the principal cannon armament of the United States military fixed-wing aircraft for fifty years.

In the never-ceasing race to build a machine gun capable of matching the GAU-19 in raw power, the many gunsmiths of Fairview's four outposts joined together in a massive collaboration. The outcome of their work was the XLGunner-8. A true beast of a machine gun that has left even AdminPwn's own Dusk gunsmiths somewhat green with envy. The XLGunner-8 is superior in pure damaging power than most light machine guns of its tier, it shoots with a “scattershot” effect, and fires as fast as a minigun. However, due to design limitations, it can only hold 120 rounds per drum and suffers from poorer accuracy due to a shorter barrel.

This weapon could only be bought from the Credit Shop for 3,000 credits (2,500 for Gold Members). It was on sale from December 10th, 2013 until January 10th, 2014.

The SCAR 9000 was a chance discovery by a group of scavengers disassembling military aircraft within the more heavily infested regions of Fairview. Stripped down and re-assembled to cut down on weight and recoil, it is now used primarily by the very best of survivors due to its brutal efficiency. Though not as powerful as the other rare Miniguns, its ability to mow down hordes of undead with withering firepower is enough to have any survivor with a need for carnage grinning with feral joy.

The GAU-19 is an electrically driven Gatling Gun that fires deadly .50 BMG (12.7 x 99 mm) rounds at up to 1000-2000 rounds per minute. Weighing in at a hefty 139 pounds and having a recoil force exceeding 500 pounds, the GAU-19 normally cannot be wielded by a man and is intended for use in helicopters, on ships and vehicles - however, gunsmiths have, somehow, someway, modified the minigun for human use. These modifications include reducing the firing speed to "only" about 700 rounds per minute, implementing a new cartridge feeding & firing system as well as material replacements at various parts of the gun. In conjunction, all these changes reduced felt recoil by massive amounts and cut the overall weight almost in half, which greatly enhances the usability of the GAU-19 by humans.

This weapon could only be bought from the Credit Shop for 12000 credits (11000 Credits for Gold Members). It was on sale from October 11, 2008, until January 9th, 2010. Though this weapon may have a lot of similarities with the regular GAU-19, it performs in a very different way. When fired, 1 bullet is shot rather than 3 bullets. To compensate, the weapon was given the highest fire rate in the game set at 30 shots a second making it a truly unique weapon.

This weapon was removed on November 28th, 2008. Very few are owned and seeing one is quite rare, they are normally held by game moderators or special members of the community.

With the implementation of the new "Junkyard" technology used since a year ago and the use of 14.5x114mm ammo imported from Russia, this gun can fire rounds at a devastating velocity at the expense of a slower 500 rounds per minute, to prevent the gun from overheating and exploding when fired too long. With this, the Wraith Cannon is among the deadliest weapons we have to combat the infected. So called because of its ability to tear a Wraith into shreds in a matter of minutes. The same can be said about other heavily, mutated infected.
