A Sniper's Guide to Rifles ▄︻デ══━一💥[]

Naturally accurate, with a good base chance for critical hits and superior shot-for-shot damage output compared to other weapons, Rifles serve well as ranged looting weapons and are effective in most builds. Like Pistols, Rifles do not increase aggro but still draw the attention of the zombies on your screen, who will hear the shots and attack you.

Rifles are divided into 2 categories: Bolt Action Rifles and Carbines.

  • Bolt Action Rifles are characterized by their Very High Accuracy, high damage per shot, and one round-per-second base fire rate. They provide the highest DPH in the game and are ideal at 1HKOing high HP zombies in endgame zones with minimal damage boost, at the cost of being mediocre against everything else.
  • Carbines are characterized by their High Accuracy and lower damage per shot, but faster 1.5+ rounds-per-second fire rate. They are comparable to Revolvers and provide better crowd control than Bolt Actions.

Low-tier Rifles are very powerful compared to low-tier Melee Weapons and Pistols, with the caveat that they require expensive ammunition and have a higher Critical requirement (112 instead of 79). This poses a significant handicap for lower-level players who cannot loot rifle ammo in sufficient quantities, as opposed to Pistols, whose ammunition is available in an abundant quality, and Melee Weapons, which require no upkeep at all. As proficiency goes up, however, these differences gradually lessen, to the point that late-game Rifles perform and cost practically the same as late-game Pistols.

Requirements[]

Rifles have no strength requirements. The first rifle available, the Beretta CX4/RX4, requires 10 proficiency points to use. The Farmer class starts out with a Mini-41, along with 80 rounds of 5.5mm.

Early-game Rifles require 112 Critical Hit to reach optimal per-shot performance, while late-game Rifles require 79 Critical Hit. High Accuracy Rifles require 59 accuracy for Reliable Aim On-screen, 69 accuracy for Perfect Aim On-screen/Reliable Aim Off-screen, and 79 accuracy Perfect Aim Off-screen. Very High Accuracy Rifles require 44 accuracy for Perfect Aim Off-screen, which can be achieved simply through Master/God-crafted weapons.

Looting/Scouting[]

Since they only draw aggro from zombies currently on-screen, Rifles are ideal for scouting and looting runs in the Inner City. Some general tips:

  • Rifles can easily hit distant zombies with relative consistency. Try to snipe them before they get close.
  • Stay in the open. Due to their low rates of fire, Rifles are not the best weapons to use in close quarters, especially against large mobs, and a single missed shot can be costly. With a high critical stat, this is not as big a concern, provided the Rifle is one of the faster-firing ones.
  • Be ammo conscious. With relatively slow reloads (unless one has high Reloading), learning to reload whenever you get a quiet moment is important. As with any weapon, one trick is to hit "R" just before you transition to another screen, as this results in an instantaneous reload once you reach the next block.

Aggro Combat/Boss Fighting[]

Rifles are not as good as Pistols at aggro combat, due to their lower firerate and crowd control capability. They can be effective at fighting retreats and make for great boss hunting weapons thanks to their high accuracy, single target DPS, and ammo efficiency, as long as the player uses the proper tactics.

  • The standard method to boss fighting with Pistol/Rifle is to run laps around the entire block without stopping. Eventually, the aggro will be left behind, leaving only the boss to be focus fired on.
  • Alternatively, find a length of wall/fence to trap the horde behind. As long as no trapped zombie is killed, the game will not attempt to spawn more and allow you to solo the boss in relative peace.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages

  • Early-game Rifles are significantly more powerful than other weapons.
  • Rifles are relatively silent and do not cause aggro spikes, allowing them to be used extensively during looting.
  • Rifles start out with the best accuracy in the game, meaning early stat points can be spent elsewhere.
  • Most Rifles have a comparatively large magazine capacity.
  • Bolt Action Rifles have the greatest per-shot damage of all weapons; high-end rifles can 1HKO endgame zombies with minimal damage boost and grant supreme ammo efficiency against bosses.

Disadvantages

  • Early-game Rifles are hard to find, use expensive ammo, and only have High instead of Very High Critical Hit chance.
  • Rifle ammunition has smaller box sized compared to handgun ammunition (1,200 per box compared to pistols having 1,600 per box).
  • Bolt Action Rifles have the lowest fire rate in the game, which results in slow killing speed and almost no crowd control against hordes. Furthermore, while damage boosts from Drugs/Implants allow Pistols to reach 1HKO thresholds for tougher zombies, these boosts do little to improve the effectiveness of low RoF-high damage Rifles.

As most M24s in Fairview came from mothballed military storages, post-apocalyse gunsmiths have taken upon themselves to keep the weapon relevant. The most common upgrade kit takes inspiration from the M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle, and includes things such as an extended magazine, a close range scope, a heavy barrel that can accept a suppressor to reduce recoil at close range, and a new pistol grip made out of scrap wood.

Standard issue US Military rifle from 1936-1955, the Garand was a revolutionary design in terms of its semi-automatic action. The rifle is fed by unique 8 round en-bloc clips which are ejected when the last round is fired, making the characteristic *ping* sound. It has a reputation for excellent reliability, accuracy, and firepower. Many civilians have been raiding old surplus stores for these relics of the past.

Real Name: Falcon OP96
A huge sniper/anti-materiel rifle manufactured by ZVI in the Czech Republic. The rifle is manufactured in two variants - the OP 96 for NATO-standard .50 BMG cartridge, and Russian-standard 12.7x108mm cartridge. The Hawk is a bullpup configuration weapon with a Mauser-type action. Built-in 2 round magazine may be blocked by a special cover to convert a rifle to single-shot mode. Hawk has mounts for various telescopic sights, as well as backup iron sights. To reduce felt recoil, the Hawk is equipped with a muzzle brake and spring-powered recoil pad in butt-stock. All of this adds up to make the OP96 a very formidable weapon, and many survivors are sure to find it effective against some of the more dangerous mutants (and bosses) in Fairview.

Real Name: Dragunov SVD
The SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, Снайперская Винтовка Драгунова, AKA "Dragunov Sniper Rifle") was designed to extend the effective range of Soviet rifle platoons. Fairly accurate and quite reliable, it was adopted and copied in many (especially former Eastern-bloc) countries. For export purpose, the variant commonly seen in Fairview is chambered in the 7.62x51mm NATO round instead of the original 7.62×54mmR.

An Ukranian conversion kit originally designed to be a stopgap measure in the country's modernization program, before the outbreak suspended that indefinitely. Aside from the normal modernization features like synthetic furniture and Picatinny rails, it is notable for its improved barrel that accepts most forms of American commercial suppressors and muzzle brakes. Alongside existing stocks, gunsmiths have recently managed to replicate this kit, thanks to blueprints that were stuffed inside an airdropped 14mm ammo crate for unknown reasons.

The Barrett M82 was primarily used as an "anti-materiel rifle", meaning that it was not intended for direct use against live targets, but to damage and destroy equipment like trucks, lightly armored APCs, and parked aircraft by using the devastating .50 BMG round. The A2 variety (dropped from production) uses a bullpup design which places the action behind the trigger mechanism, which makes it possible to shorten the overall length of the rifle while retaining barrel length.

The VSS (Vintovka Snaiperskaja Specialnaya, Винтовка Снайперская Специальная, Special Sniper Rifle) is a Russian sniper rifle based on the AS VAL, made specifically for the Spetsnaz. The rifle is made for stealth attacks and can be stripped down and fitted inside a customized briefcase. A notable difference of the VSS to more common rifles is that the actual barrel tube makes up only about 1/3 of the length of the visible "barrel", the rest is a high-quality silencer specifically made to shoot the rare and subsonic 9x39mm cartridge.

The Ironsight 33-F was developed through the gunsmiths' attempts to make use of scrapped sniper rifles they found in the Yard. They put a particular focus on finding a way to integrate the most effective components of various rifles into one gun, and spent a great deal of time modifying these parts to be interchangeable. The weapon ultimately turned out drastically better than expected and is proving to be one of the most powerful rifles we have. One of the gun's most popular features is the extended scope (built from parts of the M82A2's standard scope and several smaller scopes), which has allowed survivors to pinpoint targets at distances well beyond the ranges of pre-existing scoped rifles.

An accurized Ironsight model, made by a hermit blacksmith residing in southeastern Fairview. The Pierceshot is fitted for long range sniping, featuring a durable lightweight body made of Experimental Part alloy, a custom 5-40x scope and a lengthened barrel for extra velocity - the last of which is also responsible for the rifle's over penetration tendency.

A devastating carbine based on the FN SCAR-20, a renowned pre-outbreak battle rifle. The original rifle's body and components were rebuilt using titanium steel to prevent the gun from exploding when firing the more powerful 14mm rifle rounds, allowing it to deliver rifle rounds to the face of the infected at a high velocity and splatter them into nothing but a bloody mess. Like most of the gunsmith's 2nd generation designs, this weapon features a stubby bayonet that's somehow even shorter than the suppressor it's mounted beneath, which proved to be... just as effective as the other ones in the same line, to put it in a positive way.

With the design for the N-9/2025 somewhat functional on a pistol round, gunsmiths in Fairview carried on by adopting it to an intermediate rifle cartridge, like the 7.62x51mm NATO round that can be readily produced at Fort Pastor. For the rifle part, some of the most accurate M1 Garand copies available underwent a total redesign using parts taken from the Worg Carbine; this included a new camouflage paint job, a new recoil compensator, a high-powered scope and a modified feed system that uses 20-round BAR magazines for increased capacity. Sadly, the last part also removed the *ping* sound once the rifle is empty that is loved by so many fans of the original M1.

The Zastava Arms M-137 "Silver Lance" is a prototype 14.5×114mm anti-materiel sniper designed in the Czech Republic, aimed at countering the rise of heavy infantry armors such as the Exterminator and Bio Reactive. Like its smaller cousin M-93, the M-137 uses a scaled-up Mauser 98 action dating back all the way to the Tankgewehr M1918, the first anti-materiel in history, though with plenty of modernizations to make the weapon more accurate and less painful to use.

Several of these rifles were imported to Fairview to test the Scarab Reactive, before the sudden outbreak put that on indefinite hiatus. As the rifle's first few blueprints did not contain a trace of its initial name, it was given a new designation by Fairview citizens in line with the Ironsight 33-F.

A mysterious rifle allegedly able to pierce anything that comes in its way, with accuracy exceeding any other known rifle in the world. It was rumored to be created from bones, taken from the remains of snipers who were unable to survive the first outbreak. Some survivors speak with much horror of having experienced a twisted craving to kill their fellow survivors when wielding this weapon, particularly other marksmen-- or anyone toting a rifle, for that matter. All of those survivors agree this gun is NOT for the faint of heart. If you listen closely, you can even still hear the loud cries of the dead it has claimed. Beware: Should you wander into the cross-hairs of anyone who wields this weapon, then you have virtually no hope of escaping a sudden, silent death.

An ambitious attempt at replicating the only Gauss Rifle in existence, the Marksman G8 relies on batteries that can be recharged with a companion hand-crank generator to propel standard 14mm rounds to Mach 5 speed, well beyond what a traditional 14mm rifle can do. This, combined with the fact that it fires the whole bullet (65% more bullets per bullet!), gave the Marksman a definite firepower advantage against other rifles of its time. Eventually, its fragility and lack of spare parts led to its discontinuation, and it was superseded for the most part by the more conventional and faster firing Worg Carbine.

To further extend the Ironsight 33-F's abilities, this weapon was built by the gunsmiths by re-doing the Ironsight's blueprints from the scratch and optimizing the usage of rifle components found scrapped in the Junk Yard, resulting in a lighter, smaller yet deadlier rifle. A single bullet from this rifle can easily turn a weak zombie into soup due to its massive velocity.

The science lads at Secronom Bunker recently tested a brand new anti-zombie serum to improve upon the Devil Heart-based N-9/2025, by outfitting a few pre-outbreak hunting crossbows with bolts full of the solution. Results are mixed: The serum proved effective at inhibiting zombies's regenerative functions and attacking infected cells, but ineffective against humans and too fragile to be used in any type of firearm. The crossbow was ultimately discontinued, yet its potential as a silent ranged zombie killer still leaves quite a few survivors eager to own a copy.

Following the initial success of the Cryo Launcher, Secronom Bunker R&D went ahead and experimented with designing "cryo-based" projectile weapons. To maximize effect of the coolant, a 3-step delivery system was proposed: The first AP round digs a hole through armor, the second chemical-filled round freezes the exposed flesh, and the third hollow-point round rips the now frozen tissue apart.

The prototype battle rifle C12 "Hailstorm" is a manifestation of that concept. Test results were promising; the rifle proved to be particularly effective against superheavy flaming infected, thanks to the coolant lowering the target's body temperature and disrupting its regenerative effect. On the other hand, some concerns were raised over the rifle's "erratic recoil", which occasioanlly threw off aim and prevented the full burst from landing.

This strange crossbow is one of the most bizarre, yet effective weapons that have appeared in recent years. With a rustic design and sporting a superior firing system is what characterizes this new weapon. Capable of firing 16 bolts at exhausting speeds and with the ability to penetrate armor, this weapon has positioned itself as an excellent option either for looting or for facing the different bosses that populate the battlefield. Few copies have been seen, which is why they are highly in demand in the market.

During an expedition deep in the SEZ, Secronom Scientists discovered what they thought to be the carcass of a large, unknown Insect, in what appeared to be a nest made from the flesh of the mutated undead occupying the SEZ. Upon returning to Secronom Bunker with the Insect, the Scientists soon realized the Insect wasn’t exactly dead, but rather dormant. When fed Weapons Grade N4 chunks or “Biomass” into the cavities on the back of the creature, it would quickly produce small offspring that would actively seek out infected tissue. The offspring would attack infected with a type of acid, greatly damaging the host, and then shortly die after. Realizing they could replicate the reproduction process of these offspring, the Scientists quickly weaponized the insects into one of the strangest weapons the survivors of Fairview has even seen. DNA programming allows commands to be given to the small insects, either to have them seek out infected or fly straight ahead into the nearest contact.

The XR-2 Magstorm, created by the same eccentric and mysterious engineer who made the XR-1 Pulse Rifle, has quickly earned its status to be one of the most devastating rifle Fairview or the entire post-apocalyptic world has ever seen. Possibly inspired by the electrifying Hypercoil X1 while also having solved the intense heat and energy requirements to optimally shoot superheated material on a portable weapons platform like the XR-1. The XR-2 Magstorm (more commonly understood by most as a railgun) instead diverts all the energy and ingenuity into superconducting coils to create a magnetic field so strong that it can launch small metal rods of upwards to Mach 15. This allows the weapon to pierce through almost every obstacle as if they weren't even there, be it inanimate objects, reanimated abominations or armors alike. An incredibly expensive weapon to produce and thus only some of the most successful survivors would ever be able to get their hands on.

Due to everchanging combat circumstances, survivors can chose between using hardened rods made out of solid tungsten for maximum penetration, or opt for a tungsten capped "hollow point" rod made out of softer metals to cause maximum internal damage once the rod reaches its intended target.

As part of a direct order from AdminPwn to further improve the X-Dusk Carbine, various resources looted from bandit outposts were earmarked for this cause. Using the technologies developed through the experimental parts found in these raids this new creation turned out to be more than promising. The Dawn Carbine (named after the bright silver color that the model acquires when undergoing the conversion) has positioned itself as one of the best carbines available in Fairview, after the necessary adjustments and optimizations this monster of a weapon is capable of shooting 14mm rounds at extreme speeds, capable of penetrating the fearsome Devil Hound's skin like butter, demonstrating promising AP capability. To obtain a copy of this beautiful battle rifle, you must have the necessary status to carry it, as well as the necessary money to pay for the materials and labor, provided by AdminPwn and his group of gunsmiths.

Faced with another wave of yet more vaguely werewolf-looking infected, Fairview engineers took lessons learned from the Silver Slugster to create a long range counterpart. Thus, discarded Winchester M1894s were refurbised and modified to use silver nitrate tipped 9x39mm rounds; this round was chosen due to the M1894's lever action being too weak to accept supersonic rifle loads. Once again, no research was made into whether or not the silver compound had any effect, but this is of interest to nobody as long as the outposts' silver supply remains plenty.

You wouldn't expect Santa to need protection, but wouldn't you know it, this cherry red Christmas themed rifle is rumored to have been stolen right from the fat man's sled. The crew worked tirelessly to reverse engineer the weapon and begin manufacturing this monstrous rifle. It was a reward for helping out with the 2023 Christmas challenge and packs quite the punch for what it is. This rifle utilizes cryo rounds so those pesky tendrils sprinting at the speed of light will stop in their tracks once the 12.7 from this penetrates their flesh. It would seem the engineers grew tired of this quickly as manufacturing has seized and we are unsure when production will begin again.

The origins of this mysterious weapon are unknown. It's sleek and gothic in nature design make the weapon beautiful, maybe even elegant, but trust me you do not want to be hit by this monster of a rifle. It's said that the rounds chambered in this rifle separate the soul from the body, making your movement sluggish. More likely, you just got shot, Jack, and you're drunk again. This weapon disappeared from the Venditron and streets some time ago. We haven't had a survivor report finding one in quite some time. If you do get your hands on it, stay safe. It's common practice to buddy up with your rifle for safety these days, but this one givens off seriously sinister vibes.

Created by a mysterious and eccentric engineer, the XR-1 Pulse Rifle was the first step in creating weapons using electro-magnetic propulsion. This weapon design is capable of launching projectiles at high velocity without the need for combustion pressure, like standard firearms. The original iteration of the weapon would launch two projectiles per trigger pull due to the inability to properly regulate the magnetic pull from the propulsion system. These projectiles would leave the rifle at about 4000 ft per second. The propulsion system was later corrected, enabling an alternate firing mode that launches a singular projectile at even higher speeds, allowing for a higher damage scale per projectile.
